Washington, PA-The Washington Wild Things announced the signing of former New York Yankees pitching prospect and western Pennsylvania native Tim Giel to a 2015 contract.

Giel, a resident of Gibsonia, PA who attended Shady Side Academy, signed with the Yankees as an undrafted free agent in 2013. The hard-throwing right-handed hurler pitched two seasons in the Yankees system before recently signing a contract to play in Washington this summer.

Last season, Giel pitched for the Staten Island Yankees, the Yankees Class Short-Season A affiliate in the New York Penn League. In 18 games with Staten Island, he posted a 1-1 record with a 4.65 ERA in 31 innings of relief. As a rookie with the Yankees in 2013, he started the season with the Gulf Coast League (GCL) Yankees. He registered a 2.18 ERA in 15 games.

Giel pitched one game with Staten Island in 2013 and earned the win for the Yankees after throwing 2 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball.

In 2012, Giel competed in the Cape Cod League for the Bourne Braves and was named a 2012 Cape Cod League All-Star

Over the course of his four-year career at Columbia University, Giel posted a 10-9 record with a 4.03 ERA in 190 innings of work. His senior season was his most impressive yet. During the 2013 season, he compiled a 3-3 record with a 3.20 ERA in 64 2/3 innings. He also recorded 51 strikeouts, his highest total in a single season earning him an All-Ivy honorable mention.

Giel had an outstanding high school career at Shady Side. As a senior, he was named the Western Pennsylvania AA Pitcher of the Year and was a two-time MVP and two-time all-section. He set numerous school records for career wins and career strikeouts as well as records for single-season strikeouts and lowest opponents' batting average.

The Wild Things open the 2015 season against the Frontier League reigning champions, the Schaumburg Boomers, on Friday, May 15 at 7:05 p.m. For season tickets, individual game tickets, group outings and/or marketing opportunities, call the CONSOL Energy Park Front Office at 724-250-9555.
