Wild Things Add Pitcher to 2007 Roster

Washington, PA--The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, announced they signed RHP Gus Hlebovy (Le-Bove-y) Wednesday to a 2007 contract.

Hlebovy was originally drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 22nd round of the 2003 June Free-Agent draft from Kent State University. That season at Kent, Hlebovy was the Mid-American Conference relief pitcher of the year posting a record of 6-3, with 11 saves, and 42 strikeouts in 40 innings pitched.

He made his professional debut in 2003 with the GCL Expos appearing in 12 games, posting a record of 1-2, a 2.60 ERA with 20 strikeouts, eight walks, and 26 hits allowed in 28 innings pitched. In 2004 he was the New York Penn League Rolaids relief pitcher of the year with a league high 16 saves to go along with a 3-0 record and 47 strikeouts against 18 walks in 33 innings over 30 appearances for the Vermont Expos.

He split the 2005 and 2006 seasons between Savannah (GA) of the South Atlantic League, and the GCL Nationals. Last season with the GCL Nationals he posted a 1-0 record with a 1.59 ERA over nine games, allowing 11 hits, and one walk while striking out eight and earning two saves in 11 innings. He was promoted to Savannah where he recorded 12 strikeouts in 14 innings pitched over 11 games to go along with a 2-2 record.

"Gus has had a lot of success at both the college and pro levels," said Wild Things field manager, John Massarelli. "He has proven himself successful in getting the last six outs of a ball game. We will put him in our relief pitcher rotation."

The Wild Things, who play in the Independent Frontier League of professional baseball, open the 2007 season on May 23rd at home when they welcome the league's newest team, the Slippery Rock Sliders to Washington.
