Wichita Thunder News Release
Wichita, KS (March 14th) - The Central Hockey League announced today the five finalists for the CHL Man of the Year Award with Wichita's Travis Wight being among that group. The award will be announced on Wednesday, March 20th. Wight becomes the fourth Thunder player to earn a year-end award nomination.
The CHL Man of the Year Award is 'presented annually to the Central Hockey League player adjudged to have best exemplified strong leadership qualities on and off the ice, while making significant and noteworthy humanitarian contributions to his community.'
Wight has been a cornerstone for Wichita over the last three seasons. On the ice, the Fannystelle, Manitoba native has played in 192-consecutive games in a Thunder uniform. Off the ice, Wight is involved in many different aspects in the community. After graduating with his masters from Newman University last season, he spends his time away from the arena student teaching and creating lesson plans for the children he educates. He also helps out with a group of special needs adults, called The ARC. Members of the Thunder, including Travis, play in a floor hockey game with these individuals and invite them out to a game where the Thunder wear special uniforms to help raise money for their cause.
"Travis has been terrific for this organization over the last three seasons," commented Head Coach Kevin McClelland. "He plays a solid defensive game and brings it every night. Off the ice, he is involved in so much in the community and really helps out in that regard. He is very deserving of this honor."
The other finalists named are Jon Booras of Bloomington, David Simoes of Missouri, Scott Wray of Rapid City and Gary Steffes of Tulsa. The other Thunder players that have earned year-end nominations are Torrie Jung for Most Outstanding Goaltender, Kevin Young for Most Outstanding Defenseman and Greger Hanson for Rookie of the Year.
Wichita will travel to Arizona tomorrow take on the Sundogs for a pair of games before finishing off its four-game road trip in Allen, TX the following Tuesday. The Thunder will not return to home-ice until March 22nd against the Allen Americans. For tickets, call 755-SEAT, visit the INTRUST Bank Arena box office or online at www.selectaseat.com.
