Chicago Steel News Release

(GENEVA, IL.) - 14 dachshunds took to the ice Saturday night in a popular junior hockey tradition for the third annual Chicago Steel Wiener Dog Races at the Fox Valley Ice Arena. Barry Sanders, a 1-year-old dachshund from Chicago, advanced through the preliminary heat to earn the championship trophy, edging out five fellow finalists Bean, Mavis, Pablo and two-time defending champion, Monty. The Steel are a member of the United States Hockey League -- the premier development league for the next generation of college and NHL stars. The Steel, currently in the midst of a record-breaking season including a franchise record in single-season victories, are the first USHL team to qualify for the 2020 Clark Cup Playoffs and have a roster comprised of NHL prospects.

Race proceeds went to Rescue Warriors Corp., an Elgin-based nonprofit whose mission is to save abandoned animals from being euthanized. The organization is run by volunteers and generous supporters who have provided their time and financial support to help with their mission. The winner received a prize package provided by Woofbeach. The Steel extended their win streak to 13 games, matching the franchise record set earlier this season, with a 6-5 overtime win over the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Jimmy Dowd Jr., Elis Hede, Tyler Carpenter, Sam Colangelo and John Spetz tallied goals in regulation and Mathieu De St. Phalle registered the overtime game winner. Netminder Ian Shane turned away 26 shots in the victory. Chicago is the only team in the USHL to have a spot in the 2020 Clark Cup Playoffs locked up thus far.
