Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. (April 29, 2013) - Stephen Wickens delivered a two-out, two-run triple in the ninth to erase a one-run deficit and give the Fort Myers Miracle a 5-4 victory over the Clearwater Threshers on Monday at Bright House Field.
The Miracle entered the ninth trailing 4-2 but scored three runs - all unearned - with two outs to extend their winning streak to six games and win their Florida State League-leading 20th game.
The rally started with a lead off walk from Eddie Rosario. Miguel Sano followed with a high chopper that went over third baseman Maikel Franco's head into left field. Sano, as the tying run, hustled into second for a double and narrowly beat the relay throw.
Ryan O'Sullivan settled down to strike out Drew Leachman and Kennys Vargas, but his defense failed him when Matt Koch hit a routine grounder to short that was bobbled by Jose Mojica. Rosario scored to make it 4-3, Sano dove safely back to third and Koch reached first.
After Andy Leer replaced Koch as the go-ahead run on first, Wickens hit a ball down the right field line that fell safely to the ground when Kelly Dugan missed it on a diving attempt. Sano trotted home and Leer scored standing up to make it 5-4 as the ball rolled all the way to the wall.
Zack Jones closed out the game by getting Logan Moore to ground into a 4-6-3 double play.
The two teams played scoreless baseball until the sixth inning when Levi Michael belted his first homer of the year, a two-run shot, off of Luis Garcia.
The Threshers took the lead in the seventh when Mojica ripped a two-run single with two outs against reliever Dakota Watts to make it 3-2.
Miracle starter Tom Stuifbergen left the game with what appeared to be a right leg injury after pitching 2 2/3 innings. Nelvin Fuentes replaced him and retired all 10 batters he faced, including five on strike outs, before giving way to Watts.
Threshers starter Gabriel Arias pitched five scoreless innings.
Sano finished with two doubles for the Miracle and Wickens went 2 for 4.
The Miracle and Threshers have now played six consecutive one-run games at Bright House Field dating back to last year. The two teams meet again in Clearwater on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The game can be heard on www.miraclebaseball.com with Adam MacDonald. The Square One Burgers and Bar pregame show begins at 6:45 p.m.
