Fort Wayne, IN (May 7th) - Wichita avoided elimination this past Saturday, but couldn't extend the series back to the Air Capital, losing 6-3 to the Fort Wayne Komets in Game 5 of the 2012 President's Cup Finals on Monday night. Fort Wayne wins the series 4-1 and earns its first President's Cup since joining the CHL.
Wichita got off to a good start as Aaron Davis was pulled down heading to the net and was awarded a penalty shot. He took advantage of the opportunity and beat Nick Boucher to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead. The lead didn't last long, however, as the Komets scored three times in 2:14. Colin Chaulk redirected a shot from the blue line past Bryan Hogan and tied the game at one. Just 41 seconds later, Kaleigh Schrock made it 2-1 with a wrist shot from the right face-off circle. At 7:33, Frankie DeAngelis added to the Komet lead to make it 3-1. Fort Wayne tacked on another as Bobby Chaumont redirected one in and the Komets led 4-1, scoring four unanswered goals. Wichita's Matt Robinson (3) cut the lead to two as he got away from a defender at the Komets line and blasted one from the deep slot past Boucher to make it 4-2. Fort Wayne would get one back at 14:27 when Mike Vaskivuo tipped one home and it was 5-2 after the first 20 minutes.
In the second period, the Komets extended the lead to four when Bobby Chaumont added his second of the game at 6:39 to make it 6-2.
Thomas Beauregard (8) added his sixth point of the Finals, scoring from the right face-off circle and made it a 6-3 game in the third period. The Thunder outplayed the Komets in the final period, outshooting them 13-3, but couldn't pull any closer and the Komets won 6-3.
Aaron Davis and Thomas Beauregard each scored for the second straight game and both had a goal and an assist.
Wichita was 0-for-4 with the man advantage and Fort Wayne went 1-for-2.
