WHL Announces Weekly Award Winners
February 5, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release
Calgary, Alta. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Vancouver Giants forward Ty Ronning has been named WHL On the Run Player of the Week for the week ending February 4, 2018.
Ronning, who was drafted in the seventh round, 201st overall, of the 2016 NHL Draft by the New York Rangers, tallied seven points (5G-2A) as the Vancouver Giants closed out their eight-game home stand with three straight victories.
In Wednesday's battle against the Calgary Hitmen, Ronning tallied a pair of goals and an assist as the Giants defeated the visiting Calgary Hitmen by a 4-1 score. Ronning assisted on Vancouver's first goal, then scored their third and fourth goals of the game.
Friday, Ronning again played a strong role in a win against the Hitmen, tallying two goals in a 4-2 victory. Ronning scored Vancouver's second and third goals on the power play, helping him tie last year's career-high for game-winning goals with six.
Saturday, Ronning was again influential in the Giants' victory, adding a goal and an assist as the Giants topped the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers by a 5-4 score. Ronning scored Vancouver's third goal, then picked up an assist on the game-winner to help his side complete their perfect week.
Ronning's offensive production was a continuation of what's been an impressive overage campaign by the 5-foot-9, 172-pound Burnaby, B.C. product. In 52 games, Ronning has tallied 66 points (47G-19A), including 12 power-play goals, two short-handed goals and the aforementioned six game-winners.
Ronning earned first star honours in-house for Friday's and Saturday's contests.
The forward has helped Vancouver surge into a playoff spot in the B.C. Division with a 28-16-5-3 record. They currently sit just four points behind the Victoria Royals and Kelowna Rockets for first place in the division.
Since being drafted by the Giants in the first round, 15th overall, of the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, Ronning has appeared in 267 WHL regular season games, tallying 200 points (113G-87A). He also has 24 power-play goals, two short-handed goals and 17 career game-winning goals.
He's quickly approaching franchise history with the Giants, sitting one goal away from tying Evander Kane's single season record of 48 goals. Ronning also sits third all-time on the list of goal scorers in Giants franchise history. He needs 13 to tie second place Adam Courchaine's 126 career goals with the Giants and 23 to equal franchise leader Brendan Gallagher's 136.
The Giants will have a chance to pull themselves closer to the top of the division on Wednesday, February 7 (7:05 p.m. PST) as they travel to the Okanagan to take on the Kelowna Rockets.
REBELS' LAMB NAMED
WHL GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / MONDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2018
Calgary, Alta. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Red Deer Rebels goaltender Riley Lamb has been named WHL Goaltender of the Week and league nominee for the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending February 4, 2018.
Lamb, a 6-foot-0, 176-pound product of Rivers, Man., posted a pair of wins, a 1.96 goals-against-average, and a .934 save percentage as the Rebels went undefeated in regulation through their road trip in the East Division.
Tuesday against the Prince Albert Raiders, Lamb stopped 25 of 28 shots to score a 4-3 victory in overtime. The Raiders took the lead on three separate occasions, but held his team close enough for them to battle back each time before winning it in the extra period.
Friday against the Moose Jaw Warriors, Lamb held the league's top offence to just one goal on 33 shots in a 3-1 victory. The Rebels never trailed in Friday's contest against the league-leading Warriors as Lamb stopped all 14 shots sent his way in the third period while the Rebels broke open a 1-1 deadlock to clinch the victory. For his efforts, Lamb was named the first star of the game.
Lamb's record for the 2017-18 season now stands at 3-9-3-2 with a 3.73 GAA and .891 SV%. Joining the Rebels ahead of the 2016-17 season, the 19-year-old Lamb has appeared in 60 career WHL games with a record of 17-21-8-5, 3.50 GAA and .896 SV% with three shutouts.
The Rebels are back in action Wednesday, February 7 (7:00 p.m. MST) as they play host the Calgary Hitmen.
