Calgary, Alta. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Portland Winterhawks forward Cody Glass has been named the WHL On the Run Player of the Week for the week ending November 26, 2017.
Glass, who was made the first-ever draft pick in Vegas Golden Knights history with the sixth-overall selection in the 2017 NHL Draft, recorded 12 points (5G-7A) in four straight games as the Winterhawks' win streak reached 10 games.
Tuesday against the Kootenay ICE, Glass assisted on three of his team's goals in a 5-2 victory. Glass was named the second star of the game for his efforts. In Wednesday's 7-3 win over the Calgary Hitmen, Glass picked up a goal and two assists, scoring the game-winning goal and assisting on the insurance goal. Glass was named the second star of the game against the Hitmen, also earning third star of the night honours from the WHL.
Glass continued his offensive showings Friday in central Alberta as the Winterhawks dispatched of the Red Deer Rebels by a 6-2 final. Glass recorded a pair of goals and an assist, including a short-handed goal, ultimately being named the second star of Friday's game. Saturday in Edmonton, Glass had another two-goal effort, scoring a pair of power play goals in the second period and then assisting on the short-handed empty net goal as the Winterhawks downed the Edmonton Oil Kings by a 3-0 final, earning first star honours.
With the victory, the Winterhawks improved to 6-1 against the Eastern Conference and opened up an eight-point lead atop the U.S. Division standings in a race that was neck-and-neck with the Tri-City Americans at the beginning of the month. Glass has been a huge part of that success, with 44 points (16G-28A) in 23 games, placing him sixth in the WHL's scoring race.
That goal total includes five power play markers, one short-handed goal and three game-winning goals. Glass has points in every single game of the Winterhawks' active winning streak, accumulating 23 points (10G-13A) in that time frame. Glass represented the WHL earlier this month in the first two legs of the CIBC Canada Russia Series, scoring a goal and an assist. In 160 WHL regular season games Glass has 165 points (58G-107A).
A 6-foot-2, 177-pound product of Winnipeg, Man., Glass was originally drafted by the Winterhawks in the first round, 19th overall, of the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft.
Glass and the Winterhawks are in action Tuesday, November 28 (7:00 MST) when they have their lone meeting of the year against the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
Calgary, Alta. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Everett Silvertips goaltender Carter Hart has been named the WHL Goaltender of the Week and the league nominee for the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending November 26, 2017.
Hart, a second-round selection, 48th overall, of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2016, picked up three wins this week as the Silvertips continued to gain ground in the U.S. Division race.
Wednesday against the Tri-City Americans, Hart stopped all 43 shots sent his way as he shutout the Americans by a 3-0 final. Hart stopped 12 shots in the first, 10 in the second and 21 in the third. The shutout was his third of the month and the 22nd of his WHL career, helping him set a new Silvertips' franchise record for shutouts, passing Leland Irving. Hart was named the game's first star and subsequently named the WHL's first star of the night.
Friday against the Spokane Chiefs, Hart delivered a near-perfect effort, making 34 saves on 35 shots in a 4-1 victory. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound product of Sherwood Park, Alta. closed out his perfect week with a 22-save effort in a 5-2 win against the Vancouver Giants at home Saturday.
Since returning to the lineup in November, Hart has been one of the toughest goalies to beat. His 1.63 goals against average and .951 SV% both lead the league. He's also tied for the league lead in shutouts with three.
Originally selected in the eighth round, 158th overall, by the Silvertips in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft, Hart has compiled a 93-43-9-10 record in 161 WHL regular season games with a 2.09 goals against average and .923 SV%. Earlier this month, Hart represented Team WHL at the CIBC Canada Russia Series, earning a shutout victory in the first game of the series. Hart is the first player to earn back-to-back weekly honours this season in the WHL.
The Silvertips, who are now 6-3-0-1 in their last 10 games, sit in the first wild card spot, with two points separating them from second in the U.S. Division.
Hart and the Silvertips will be on the road Friday, December 1 (7:00 p.m. PST) to battle the Kamloops Blazers at the Sandman Centre.
