MONTPELIER, Vt. - The North Adams SteepleCats picked up their fifth win of the 2017 New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) season on Tuesday night with a 4-1 victory of the Vermont Mountaineers.

SteepleCats starter Blake Whitney (Sharpsburg, Ga./South Carolina-Upstate) struck out the first eight batters he faced and allowed just two hits over seven innings en route to the win. Whitney registered 11 total punch-outs and didn't walk anybody.

The Mountaineers had only four hits in the contest.

North Adams broke a 0-0 tie in the third inning with a solo-homerun by shortstop Liam Sabino (East Stroudsburg, Penn./Pittsburgh), who was 2-for-4.

The 'Cats added two more runs in the fourth inning thanks to a two-run double by Bryce Peterson. The RBI hit drove in Ryan Schalch (Novato, Calif./Pacific), who singled, from first and Dylan Paulson (San Elijo, Calif./Southern California), who walked, from second.

North Adams added another insurance run in the eighth inning when J.J. Shimko (Spartanburg, S.C./South Carolina-Upstate) drove in Eddy Haus (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./St. Mary's) with a sacrifice fly.

The Vermont offense managed a run in the fourth inning but was otherwise quiet. Jeffery Scott (Forest, Ind./Bowling Green State) picked up the only Mountaineers RBI of the game with a groundout that scored Nick Ward (Kennett Square, Pa./West Chester) from third.

The Mountaineers threatened in the ninth, loading the bases, but Ryan Hoogerwerf (Allen, Texas/U of Portland) struck out to end the game and Vermont couldn't push across a run.

Whitney picked up the win for North Adams, moving him to 1-1. Reliever T.J. Pagan (Philadelphia, Penn./Pittsburg) got credit for a save after throwing scoreless eighth and ninth innings.

Jared Skolnicki (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kent State) pitched well for the Mountaineers but suffered the loss. The lefty allowed three earned runs on three hits over six innings. He falls to 0-1.

The Mountaineers will play the SteepleCats again on Wednesday night in North Adams, Mass. The game starts at 6:30 p.m. at Joe Wolfe Field and can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network
