Bay Sox Drop Fourth Straight as Plymouth's Sardinas Hits for Cycle

June 21, 2017 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
New Bedford Bay Sox News Release

Plymouth's Hernen Sardinas hit for the cycle as the New Bedford Bay Sox suffered their fourth straight loss on Tuesday night in a 10-4 defeat at Paul Walsh Field.

Sardinas hit a two-run homer in the second, doubled in the fourth, singled in the sixth and eighth, and tripled to lead off the night. He had five hits, four RBIs, four runs, and one stolen base, and bumped his average from .217 to .357 with the massive outburst at the plate.

Bay Sox starter Darrien Ragins (Delaware State) got the nod on the hill on Tuesday night, and the beginning of his start looked very similar to his entire 2016 campaign with New Bedford, as he struck out two Pilgrims in the first inning while flashing the electric stuff that earned him NECBL Reliever of the Year last season.

The Pilgrims laced some hard hit balls in the top of the second inning, with Sardinas hitting a laser to left field that kept carrying and landed over the Buffalo Wild Wings sign to give Plymouth a 2-0 advantage. The visitors ripped four balls to left in that inning, while Ragins had control issues, tossing a wild pitch and a free pass.

The Bay Sox quickly answered with a run in the bottom of the second, as Dan Schock (Sacred Heart) gave the home squad their first hit with a two-out double to left center field. Chandler Debrosse (Central Connecticut State) joined him on the bases after a walk, and nine-hitter Cody Doyle (Sacred Heart) drove in Schock with a single to left field.

Plymouth regained a two-run lead in the third inning, as Sal Gozzo scored on a crazy play. Gozzo was hit by a pitch to lead off the third, then stole second base. He moved to third on a balk, and scored on an error from catcher Nick Matera (Rutgers) on an ordinary throw back to Ragins at the mound that got away.

The back-and-forth continued in the bottom of the third, as New Bedford trimmed their deficit back to one run. Consecutive singles by Nick Neville (Notre Dame) and Luke Bakula (Kansas) put runners at first and third with one out, and Karsten Sherman (Keiser) drove in Neville with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Debrosse made a brilliant baserunning play with two outs in the fourth to knot the game at 3-3. The former New Bedford Whaler drew his second walk of the game with one down, and moved to second on a ground out on a hit-and-run play by Doyle. Leadoff hitter Corey Joyce (North Carolina Central) hit a slow chopper over the head of Pilgrims' starter Garrett Acton, and shortstop Brandon Perez made a nice pick and throw to first. Joyce barely beat out the throw, and Debrosse never stopped running to score the third New Bedford run of the evening.

Plymouth took the lead in the top of the sixth, as Sardinas' huge night continued. Jeremiah Adams ripped a one-out double, which ended Ragins' night, and the Mattapoisett, MA native scored on an RBI single from Sardinas off of reliever Jacob Lamb (Richmond) to give the Pilgrims a 4-3 lead. Sardinas stole second and scored on a single by Connor Brumfield, which was the first run allowed this season by Lamb.

Sardinas was a triple away from the cycle in the top of the eighth, but laced another RBI single over the head of Bakula at third base to drive in Adams for a 6-3 lead. Sardinas scored on a home run by catcher Brandon Martorano, which came off of reliever Zack Reid (UMass Dartmouth). The homer was Martorano's first hit of the season as he made his third start behind the plate for Plymouth. The dreadful inning continued as Reid allowed four runs on six hits in just 0.2 innings, and was replaced by Dante Scafidi (Rutgers), who entered with the bases loaded. Scafidi struck out Adams, who started the eighth with his second double of the game.

The Bay Sox scored once in the bottom of the eighth, as pinch hitter Kevin Brophy (West Virginia) reached on an error and scored on a single down the right field line by fellow pinch hitter Jordan Fucci (Samford). Fucci tried to score from first on a hard double off the wall by yet another pinch hitter Dante Baldelli (Boston College), but he was gunned down at the plate.

Sardinas earned his triple for the cycle in the top of the ninth inning, as he hit a bomb to the center field wall that was bobbled by T.J. Lake (West Virginia). Lake jumped up against the grassy wall, and the ball came out of his glove and bounced off the wall. Sardinas scored on a sac fly for Plymouth's tenth run, which gave them back-to-back games with double-digit runs.

Pilgrims' reliever Seth Pinkerton picked up the win, as he threw three hitless innings with four K's, while Ragins got the loss for the Bay Sox.

These two teams will face each other yet again on Thursday night in the same location, as the action at Paul Walsh Field will begin at 6:30pm. New Bedford will look to snap their four-game losing streak on Wednesday night in Keene against the Swamp Bats.
