Whitfield Named Player of the Week
December 9, 2002 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release
SPRINGFIELD, MA ... The American Hockey League announced today that Portland Pirates center Trent Whitfield has been named the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, December 8, 2002. In three games last week, Whitfield scored three goals and added four assists for seven points to move among the leaders in the AHL's scoring race.
Whitfield did all of his damage during a two-game weekend series in St. John's, Nfld. On Friday night, the fifth-year pro scored his 10th goal of the season in the Pirates' 4-3 overtime loss to the Maple Leafs. Then on Saturday, Whitfield recorded two goals and four assists in a 7-3 victory over the Leafs, becoming the third player in Portland franchise history to pick up six points in a single game. His week ended with a recall to the parent Washington Capitals on Sunday.
In recognition of his achievement, Whitfield will receive a Sher-Wood leather jacket, presented to him during an on-ice ceremony prior to an upcoming game. In addition, Sher-Wood will donate five travel bags to the Casco Bay Youth Hockey Association in Whitfield's name.
A native of Estevan, Sask., the 25-year-old Whitfield is the Pirates' leader in all three major offensive categories this season, and is tied for fifth in the AHL in scoring with 28 points (12g, 16a) in 25 games. Whitfield, a 1996 draft pick of the Boston Bruins, has registered 63 goals and 90 assists for 153 points in 207 career AHL contests, all with Portland. He has also added two goals and five assists in 86 NHL matches with Washington and the N.Y. Rangers.
Other players nominated for Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week include Albany left wing Greg Crozier, Binghamton goaltender Ray Emery, Bridgeport center Jeff Hamilton, Cincinnati center Brendan Yarema, Cleveland left wing Lynn Loyns, Hamilton right wing Michael Ryder, Hershey center Mark Freer, Lowell defenseman Jeremiah McCarthy, Manchester defenseman Joe Corvo, Manitoba goaltender Alex Auld, Milwaukee right wing Darren Haydar, Philadelphia goaltender Matthew Yeats, Rochester right wing Jaroslav Kristek, San Antonio right wing Jim Campbell, Springfield center Jeff Taffe, Syracuse left wing Andrej Nedorost and Worcester right wing Jason Dawe.
