Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

HARLINGEN- Welinson Baez hit his first home run since returning to Rio Grande Valley after a two-year hiatus while newcomer Tomochika Tsuboi added two hits and three runs scored in his first game as the WhiteWings defeated the McAllen Thunder 11-7 at Harlingen Field on Tuesday night.

Baez hit a 2-run home run over the 20-foot high wall in left center off righthander Alexi Perez in the bottom of the first inning to give the WhiteWings (44-32) a 4-0 lead.

After McAllen collected an infield hit from Fidel Hernandez single in the third to drive in David Page and a 2-run single from Christobal Santana in the fourth off Rio Grande Valley starter Cole Stephens, Tsuboi began a 3-run WhiteWings rally off Perez (3-5) with a single to left.

The 38-year-old veteran of 14 Japanese major league seasons then walked and scored off Spencer Trygg to begin Rio Grande Valley's 3-run rally in the fifth inning, and scored Rio Grande Valley's final run in the sixth inning on Robert Moron's sacrifice fly to centerfield after hitting an opposite field triple to left to make the score 11-3.

Ruddy Yan collected four hits, drove in three runs, and scored twice for Rio Grande Valley, while Roberto Rodriguez also added three hits and two runs.

Stephens (6-4) scattered nine hits, allowed three runs, struck out four batters and walked none in recording his fourth victory against McAllen (28-49) this season.

Henry Gonzalez and Miguel Alfonzo both collected three hits and scored two runs for the Thunder, whose loss ensured them a losing 2012 season.

The two teams will meet in the second game of their four game series tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Harlingen Field, with righthander Celson Polanco trying for his 10th victory of the season for the WhiteWings. Polanco is just two victories shy of the club record.
