Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Harlingen - Roberto Rodriguez hit a walk-off single with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth as the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings beat the Coastal Bend Thunder 3-2 on Friday at Harlingen Field.
The WhiteWings (10-6) are now winners of five in a row and have had walk-off wins in three of their last four games. It is the WhiteWings' fourth-straight one-run victory.
David Cross didn't allow a hit until there were two outs in the bottom of the fifth and had a one-hit shutout going until the top of the seventh. Brian Nichols led off with a single and Manny Mejia reached on a fielder's choice. Mike Goss doubled, Kevin Butler hit a sacrifice fly, Ron Fenwick walked and Albert Gonzales hit an RBI-single to tie the game at 2-2.
That was it against Cross, who scattered four hits and three walks in seven innings while striking out three.
Jared Sutton allowed just a walk to the WhiteWings through the first three innings. Kevin Griffin led off the bottom of the fourth with the first hit of the game. One out later, Joel Roa singled and Arlon Quiroz reached on an error to load the bases. One out later, Domenic Di Ricco hit a two-run single to make it 2-0.
Michael Barbosa (1-0) picked up his first professional win by recording the final two outs of the ninth. The Thunder (6-10) stranded the bases loaded in both the eighth and ninth innings.
Toro Trevino (1-2) allowed the final run after pitching four and one-third innings of relief, giving up four hits while striking out three.
The WhiteWings and Thunder play games seven and eight of this eight-game series on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. in a doubleheader of two seven-inning games. Right-handers Luis Montano (2-0) and Andres Rosales (0-0) are expected to face right-hander J.J. Trujillo (0-2) and left-hander Frank James Jr. (2-0).
The WhiteWings are members of United League Baseball, an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas that has sent two players to Major League Baseball in Edwar Ramirez (New York Yankees) and Robinson Cancel (New York Mets).
