WhiteWings take regular season finale

Laredo, TX - The first half champion Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (50-45, 21-24) closed out the regular season with a 7-2 victory over the Laredo Broncos (41-54, 21-25) tonight at Veterans Field.

The WhiteWings exploded for five runs in the second against Ramesis Rosa (1-2) when Brian Nichols led off with a triple, Alejandro Martinez walked and Kevin Griffin hit an RBI-single. One batter later, Bub Bergstrom hit an RBI-single and moved to second on the the throw. Omar Bramasco followed with a two-run double. Miguel Peguero hit an RBI-triple to make it 5-0.

The Broncos got one back against Joe Rogers (11-3) in the third when Luis Ramos led off with a single, moved to second on a wild throw by Sam McLain and to third on a Ryan Kottke single. Pedro Lopez followed with a double play that allowed Ramos to score and make it 5-1.

The WhiteWings got that run right back in the fourth when Ryan Fox drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a Luany Sanchez single and scored on a Nichols RBI-single.

Kevin Griffin made it 7-1 by leading off the fifth with his third home run of the season, this one coming off of Brian Daly.

The Broncos mounted a two-out rally in the seventh as Randy Rosa singled and Arnoldo Ponce reached on an error. Luis Ramos hit an RBI-double to make it 7-2 and knock out Rogers. Chris Gale came in and got Ryan Kottke to fly out to end the threat.

Rogers ended up going six and two-thirds innings, allowing two unearned runs on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

The WhiteWings and second-half champion Alexandria Aces are scheduled to begin the United League Championship Series on Friday at 7:05 p.m. at Harlingen Field.
