Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
HARLINGEN - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings leapfrogged the Laredo Broncos for third place, clinched the season-series victory over the Broncos and won their franchise-record seventh-straight game on Wednesday with a 2-1 win on Wednesday at Harlingen Field.
The WhiteWings' (45-42) magic number to clinch a playoff spot is down to three. Any combination of WhiteWings wins and San Angelo Colts losses that adds up that adds up to three over the course of the rest of the season will result in the WhiteWings clinching their first playoff spot since 2007.
The WhiteWings struck against Matt Gibbs (7-4) in the top of the fourth. Luany Sanchez reached on an infield-single and Yeurys Tejeda hit an RBI-double. One out later, Brian Nichols hit an RBI-single to make it 2-0.
That was it against Gibbs, who struck out seven while allowing five hits and one walk in eight innings.
The Broncos (44-43) were stymied by Steve Raburn (4-3) throughout the first six innings, as Raburn worked in and out of trouble in the first four innings before retiring nine of ten to get through the sixth. Salvador Paniagaua broke through with his 21st home run leading off the top of the seventh to bring the Broncos within 2-1.
That was it against Raburn, who struck out four while scattering seven hits and two walks in seven and one-third innings.
Ruben De La Rosa recorded the final five outs for his third save.
The WhiteWings and Broncos play game four of this five-game series on Thirsty Thursday presented by Local's Lounge, Fox 2 Cable 6 and Q 94.5 The Rock Station. Fans can get $1 draft beers and cans of sodas as well as $2 bottles of both beer and soda. The WhiteWings will auction off their game-worn alternate jerseys after the game with all proceeds going to charity. Gates open at 6:05. Right-hander Andres Rosales (4-4) is expected to face right-hander Jeff Jamnik (4-4).
