Roadrunners Take Game One, Regain First Place

AMARILLO, Texas---The Edinburg Roadrunners used a five run third inning to defeat the Amarillo Dillas 9-4 in game one of the double header Wednesday night at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa.

With the win, Edinburg regains sole possession of first place in the United League Standings.

Mark DiBernardo (8-5) pitched a complete game allowing four runs, three earned, while scattering five hits and striking out three.

The Roadrunners (49-34) got on the board in the top of the first against Ralph Roberts (6-4). Felix Molina hit a one-out single to left and then moved to second after a wild pitch. Nelson Teilon followed with a single that put runners at first and third. A fielding error by the Dillas defense allowed Molina to score from third and put runners at second and third. Daryl Jones then hit an RBI groundout to the shortstop allowing Teilon to score. Wilson Batista gave Edinburg the 3-0 lead with an RBI single to right field allowing Concepcion to score.

Robert Matlock started things in the top of the second with a double to right field and then came into score on an RBI double by Molina making it 4-0 Roadrunners.

Edinburg added to their lead in the top of the third by sending 10 hitters to the plate. Jones led off with a double and then moved to third on a stolen base. One out later, Carlos Hereaud hit an RBI single allowing Jones to score. Hereaud then stole second and came into score on an RBI single by Alexis Hernandez who moved to third on a single by Matlock. Wilmer Pino followed with a sacrifice fly that allowed Hernandez to score. Molina then hit an RBI single to right field allowing Matlock to score from second. After a double by Teilon, Concepcion hit an RBI single that allowed Molina to score making it 9-0.

The Dillas (49-36) got on the board against DiBernardo in the bottom of the fourth when Jermel Lomack walked with the bases loaded allowing Julio Martinez to score to make it 9-1 Edinburg.

Stephen Douglas started the bottom of the sixth with a triple to deep right center field. Alberto Cruz followed with a sacrifice fly allowing Douglas to score from third. A fielding error by the Roadrunners allowed Rob Recuenco to get to second base. Jermel Lomack then hit an RBI single allowing Recuenco to score cutting the Roadrunners lead 9-3.

An RBI double by Douglas in the bottom of the seventh added another run for the Dillas but DiBernardo got the final out to give Edinburg the 9-4 victory.

The Roadrunners and Dillas will play game two of this double header at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa. Tim Haines is expected to pitch in game two for the Roadrunners with the first pitch scheduled for 9:05 p.m.
