Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Harlingen, TX - The first half champion Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (41-40, 12-19) beat the Edinburg Coyotes (37-44, 11-20) 7-5 in game one of tonight's doubleheader (two seven inning games) at Harlingen Field.

Kevin Griffin put the WhiteWings on the board in the second against Angel Rocha (1-4) by hitting a two out double, moving to third on a passed ball and scoring on a wild pitch.

In the third, Bub Bergstrom drew a leadoff walked and Omar Bramasco followed with a double. Miguel Peguero and Ryan Fox followed with back-to-back sacrifice fliess to make it 3-0.

The WhiteWings doubled their lead in the fourth with two outs as Ericnardo Padilla and Bergstrom walked. They pulled off a double steal and catcher Luis Espinosa threw to second, but second baseman Eric Gonzalez forgot to cover the bag, allowing Padilla to score and Bergstrom to move to third. Bramasco followed with an RBI double. Perguero was then hit by a pitch and Fox hit an RBI-single to make it 6-0.

The Coyotes got one back in the top of the fifth as Adam Bonner drew a leadoff walked against Julian Williams (5-4) and later scored on a Nick Aranda RBI-ground out.

The WhiteWings responded in the bottom of the frame as Luany Sanchez singled and came home three batters later on a Padilla RBI-single to make it 7-1.

The Coyotes closed to within four in the sixth as Nelson Teilon launched his league-leading 20th home run of the season, a solo-shot with one out. One batter later, Alexis Hernandez doubled. He tried to steal third, but Williams caught him. However, the throw went past Peguero, allowing Hernandez to score.

The Coyotes made things interesting in the seventh against Bobby Darling by starting with three-straight singles to bring the tying run to the plate, but Derek Bennett came in and cooled the fire by allowing just two of the runs to score while picking up his 16th save.

The WhiteWings and Coyotes play game two in about 20 minutes. Joey Cress (3-6) takes on Aaron Guerra (8-3).
