Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
HARLINGEN - Newcomer Carlos Mendoza led the offensive attack with four hits, and Antoin Gray and Denys Lantigua each had home runs as the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings busted out of their hitting funk and ended their four-game losing skid with a 10-4 victory over the Amarillo Dillas Thursday night at Harlingen Field.
Danny Bonilla (2-0) pitched five and one-third innings to get the victory for Rio Grande Valley. He struck out 11 batters and walked four while allowing four earned runs on four hits. Bonilla did not allow a hit until the fifth inning. The Wings led 6-0 before the Dillas struck for four runs in the top of the sixth to knock out Bonilla. RGV put the game away, however, by scoring four runs in the final three innings.
Mendoza, playing leftfield, had four hits in five trips, while Lantigua, coming off a hand injury, had three hits and two RBIs, including a solo homer in the seventh. Abigail Sandoval had two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs, while Gray blasted a home run to left in the fifth.
Nibaldo Acosta pitched two scoreless innings in relief, followed by an inning and two-thirds from closer Adam Clay. The new-look WhiteWings' lineup had 14 hits, including two home runs, two doubles and a triple. RGV also benefited from five walks from Dillas pitching. Josh Parker (1-1) took the loss for Amarillo, giving up 10 hits and six earned runs in four-plus innings.
Rio Grande Valley (8-13) will host San Angelo (12-9) Friday night to start a three-game series. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Pete Henyan (0-2, 2.78 ERA) will get the start for the WhiteWings.
