Alexandria Aces News Release

Edinburg, TX; June 8, 2006 - The Alexandria Aces used two third-inning ejections as motivation for an offensive explosion Thursday night, scoring a season-high six runs in the fifth inning in a 9-4 win over the Edinburg Coyotes at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. It is only the second loss of the year for first-place Edinburg, and the first in the regulation nine innings.

Aces manager Ricky VanAsselberg and catcher Kevin Griffin were both ejected in the third inning for arguing balls and strikes with home-plate umpire Jonathan Bailey, and although Edinburg took a 2-0 lead against Santo Hernandez in that inning, Alexandria rallied with one run in the fourth inning and six in the fifth. Second baseman Cleatus Davidson (3-for-4) and third baseman Erick Mejias (2-for-5, 3 RBI) were the offensive sparks.

Trailing 2-1 in the fifth, Davidson singled with one out against reliever Andy Noonan (0-1) and Trey Beamon followed with a single of his own. Both runners advanced one base on a wild pitch, coming around to score when Edinburg catcher Robinson Cancel threw the ball past Noonan and into the Aces dugout. Noonan proceeded to walk four consecutive Aces before being lifted in favor of Brian Daly. Mejias greeted Daly with a two-run double to left-center field to make it a 7-2 game. Alexandria added two runs in the sixth, again thanks to the fleet feet of Davidson and an RBI single by Adam Bonner.

On the mound, Hernandez (3-0) battled control problems - he walked a season-high six and hit one batter - to go seven solid innings. He allowed Edinburg to within 7-4 in the fifth inning but got out of a bases loaded, one-out jam to preserve the lead. Luis Rodriguez pitched the final two innings for Alexandria. Eddie Lara was 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Edinburg attack.

After a weekend trip to Laredo, the Aces return home to Bringhurst Field June 13. For more information, log on to www.myacesbaseball.com or call 473-ACES.
