WhiteWings Plate Six in the Sixth Again, Beat Thunder

ROBSTOWN - After scoring six runs in the sixth inning in a series-opening win on Tuesday, the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings against scored six runs in the sixth inning en route to an 8-2 victory over the Coastal Bend Thunder Friday at Richard M. Borchard Fairgrounds Field.

The WhiteWings (32-35) return home for nine games in eight days starting with game one of a four-game series against the San Angelo Colts Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Harlingen Field. The first 1,000 fans in line when the gates open for the game at 6:05 will receive Eric Gonzalez bobbleheads, courtesy of J and N Concrete, La Feria Coffee House Holistic Mind Institute, Fox 2 Cable 6 and Q 94.5 The Rock Station. The WhiteWings are hosting their third annual Guns N' Hoses charity softball game on the field at 5:00. Gates open at 4:00.

Up 2-1 entering the sixth, the WhiteWings sent 11 batters to the plate against three different pitchers to score six runs and take an 8-1 lead. Eric Gonzalez and Luany Sanchez led off with singles and Juan Cabrera hit an RBI-single. One out later, Domenic Di Ricco was hit by a pitch and Yeurys Tejeda hit a two-run double to knock out starter Toro Trevino (3-7). Welinson Baez followed with an RBI-single against reliever Tyler Fries. Welington Dotel drew an eight-pitch walk, Arlon Quiroz was hit by a pitch and Gonzalez drew a four-pitch walk to force in a run to make the score 8-1 and knock out Fries.

The WhiteWings struck against Trevino in the top of the fourth. Dotel beat out a grounder to third base for an infield-single. After moving to second on a groundout, Dotel scored on an RBI-single by Gonzalez to make it 1-0.

The Thunder (24-43) responded against Luis Montano (6-4) in the bottom of the fourth. Ron Fenwick drew a leadoff seven-pitch walk and moved to second on a groundout. With two outs, Alex Fernandez recorded the first hit for the Thunder, an RBI-double, to tie the game at 1-1.

The WhiteWings put runners at first and second with two outs in the top of the fifth inning to set-up an RBI-single by Baez to give the WhiteWings a 2-1 lead.

Trailing 8-1 in the bottom of the seventh, the Thunder got one back on a sacrifice fly by Mike Goss.

That was it against Montano, who allowed six hits in seven innings while striking out four and walking four.
