\'Runners Split With Dills As Comeback Falls Short

EDINBURG, Texas---The Edinburg Roadrunners comeback attempt fell short in the bottom of the seventh inning as they fell 5-3 to the Amarillo Dillas Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium in front of 4,170 in attendance.

With the loss, Edinburg's lead over the Dillas for first place in the United League Standings is now two and a half games.

The Dillas (39-30) got on the score board in the top of the second against Eric Montoya (8-3). With the bases loaded, Andrew Wong hit an RBI single to left field that allowed Stephen Douglas to score giving Amarillo the 1-0 lead.

Joaquin Rodriguez started the top of the third with a double. After a single by Julio Perez and a walk to Douglas, Alberto Cruz hit a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Rodriguez to score from third extending the Dillas lead 2-0.

The Roadrunners (39-25) got on the board in the bottom of the third against Ralph Robert (5-3) with a solo home run by Albert Gonzalez, his first of the season, cutting the Dillas lead 2-1.

Back-to-back RBI singles in the top of the fourth by Rodriguez and Carlos Figueroa allowed Andrew Wong and Sam Palace to score making it 4-1 Amarillo.

In the bottom of the seventh, three straight walks loaded the bases for Robert Matlock followed with an RBI walk that allowed Alexis Hernandez to score. Felix Molina then hit into a double-play that allowed Eddie Wilson to score cutting the Dillas lead 4-3.

Amarillo added an insurance run in the top of the eighth with a passed ball that allowed Palace to score making it 5-3 Dillas.

Ramon Geronimo pitched a scoreless ninth for his 15th save of the season to give Amarillo the 5-3 victory.

The Roadrunners start a five-game series Saturday night against the Coastal Bend Thunder at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Mark DiBernardo (6-4) is expected to face Jorge Lugo (0-0) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
