Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
The waiting is about over, the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings begin their 96-game 2012 schedule against the Fort Worth Cats in Cowtown on Wednesday.
The WhiteWings, North American League southern division defending champions, will play the Cats in Fort Worth four games, then return to Harlingen Field to open a two-game Memorial Day weekend series with the Edinburg Roadrunners. Gametime on Sunday is 6:05 p.m., while Monday's game will begin at 7:05 p.m. Special Memorial Day activities honoring veterans is scheduled.
Longtime former major league pitcher Rafael Reyes will be on the mound in the opening game in Fort Worth Wednesday. He is tentatively scheduled to be the starting pitcher in the WhiteWings second home game, according to Field Manager Eddie Dennis.
Dennis, back for the fourth consecutive year and ninth overall, said the club's strength, at least at this time, is in its pitching. He believes the hitting will come around, however.
Last year much of the success was due to heavy hitting. The WhiteWings defeated the San Angelo Colts for the southern division title, but fell to the Edmonton, Canada, Capitols in the NAB title series.
Although spring training officially began on May 15, most of the players have been working out for three or more weeks.
The WhiteWings played an exhibition game on Kids Day last Thursday, nipping the McAllenThunder, 3-2. On Saturday they participated in a Rally Around the WhiteWings parade and later autograph signing in downtown Harlingen.
Season ticket holders also are scheduled to meet the players Tuesday evening at a party slated under the tent at Harlingen Field.
