Roadrunners Announce 2012 Opening-Day Roster

EDINBURG, Texas--- The Edinburg Roadrunners have announced their 2012 opening day roster for Wednesday night's game against the Abilene Prairie Dogs at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Outfielder Stantrel Smith, catcher Osiel Flores, and RHP Julio Castro return for another season with the Roadrunners. In 2011, Castro went 3-1 with a 2.05 ERA with 11 saves. Smith had a .305 batting average with two homeruns and 46 RBI and added 42 stolen bases. Flores batted .247 with seven homeruns and 41 RBI a season ago.

The Roadrunners bring back familiar faces for the 2012 season. Infielders Carlos Hereaud, Cristobal Santana, Wilmer Pino, Outfielder Vincent Blue, and pitcher Miguel Martinez all spent time with the Roadrunners in the last few seasons.

In 2010, Hereaud batted .316 with 11 homeruns and 58 RBI. Santana played in Edinburg during the 2008 season and posted a .274 batting average with three homeruns and 41 RBI. Blue, who was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 10th round of the 2001 MLB draft, posted a .236 average, two homeruns and 28 RBI in 2010 for Edinburg.

Pino posted a .323 batting average with the Roadrunners in 2010 while hitting seven homeruns and driving in 52 and stealing 49 bases. Last season, he played with the Rio Grande Valley Whitewings where he hit 13 homeruns and had 62 RBI.

Martinez played in Edinburg during the 2008 season and posted a record of 7-5 with a 5.03 ERA with 70 strikeouts. Last season, Martinez pitched with the Road Warriors of the Atlantic League and posted a 6-12 record with a 4.79 ERA.

Outfielder Tim Battle, outfielder Derek Perren, infielder Jose Mendoza, infielder Pascual Del Real, and catcher Eric Bloom close out the position players for the Roadrunners.

Along with Martinez and Castro, the pitching staff will also include RHP Dave Dinelli, LHP Kirk Wetmore, RHP Paul Koss, LHP Rusty Jones, RHP Ryan Smith, RHP Aaron Tullo, RHP James Hoyt, RHP Stefan Comeaux, and RHP Matison Smith.

The Roadrunners open their 2012 season tomorrow night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. It will be the first game of a four-game series with the Abilene Prairie Dogs.
