San Angelo Colts News Release

San Angelo, Texas --- The San Angelo Colts have narrowed down their roster to the United League maximum of 23 players in preparation for Opening Night.

The Colts announced Tuesday they have signed pitcher David Phillips and released infielders Clay Calfee and Relly Mercurio, catcher Zach Crosswhite and pitchers Kris Honel and Francisco Cervantes. They also placed pitchers Gorman Romero and Chris Weast, and outfielder Rudy Wilson on the inactive list.

Phillips is a lefty who is entering his third professional season, and first as a pitcher. He spent the first two years of his career as an outfielder in the independent Frontier League. Last season Phillips played for the Gateway Grizzlies.

At Gateway, Phillips hit .239 with seven RBIs in 22 games. Phillips split his rookie season between the Washington Wild Things and Lake Erie Crushers.

Phillips, 23, was drafted by the New York Mets in 2008. He enters this season with no pitching stats, but a career .210 batting average and seven RBIs in 33 games.

In order to make room for Phillips and bring their roster down to 23 players, the Colts had to part ways with Calfee, Mercurio, Crosswhite, Honel and Cervantes.

Calfee, 25, played for the Colts last season, and hit .304 with 12 homers and 64 RBIs in 86 games. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2008, and spent three years in their organization.

Honel is a former first-round draft pick of the Chicago White Sox, and a veteran of 10 pro seasons. Honel and Cervantes both have previous experience in professional baseball, while Mercurio and Crosswhite both joined the Colts straight out of college.

Opening Night at Foster is Wednesday at 7:05 p.m., when the Colts will play game one of a four-game series against the McAllen Thunder. It is a Sherwin Wednesday, sponsored by Sherwin Williams, and there will be postgame fireworks sponsored by 1st Community Federal Credit Union.

The San Angelo Colts are a member of United League Baseball who will play their 13th season in 2012. Season ticket plans are on sale now, and available at the Colts' front office at Foster Field.
