WhiteWings Bullpen Can't Hold on Against Dillas

HARLINGEN - Staked to a 5-4 lead after seven innings, the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings bullpen allowed four runs in the top of the eighth in an 8-5 loss to the Amarillo Dillas Sunday at Harlingen Field.

David Cross started for the WhiteWings (19-29), striking out eight while allowing four runs on nine hits and three walks in seven innings. Deybi de la Cruz (0-1) started the eighth inning, walking two of the three batters he faced. Jason Moody came in, and after allowing a single to Adam de la Garza to load the bases, surrendered a bases-clearing triple to Joaquin Rodriguez. Two batters later, Stephen Doulgas hit an RBI-single to make it 7-5 Dillas (29-21).

Rodriguez, who was traded by the WhiteWings to the Dillas on February 11, finished 2-for-4 with two triples, one sacrifice fly and six RBI.

The WhiteWings scored against Ronald Lowe (5-2) right away. With one out, Kevin Griffin, Yeurys Tejeda and Luany Sanchez hit consecutive singles to make it 1-0.

The WhiteWings loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second. Griffin hit a grounder to third, but Andrew Wong threw the ball away, allowing two runs to score. Tejeda followed with a two-run single to make it 5-0.

Lowe settled down after that, allowing two hits and two walks over the next five and one-third innings. Lowe finished with five strikeouts in seven and one-third innings.

Cross stranded five Dillas in the first four innings. In the top of the fifth, however, Wong and de la Garza led off with singles and Rodriguez hit a two-run triple. Carlos Figueroa followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3.

The Dillas loaded the bases in the top of the sixth with one out and Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-4.

Tyler Pearson pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save.

The WhiteWings and Dillas play game three of this four game series Monday at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6:05. Right-hander Misael DeJesus (2-3) is expected to face right-hander Ryan Mitchell (3-2). The WhiteWings are hosting a free youth clinic on the field with WhiteWings players at 5:00 p.m. Gates open at 4:45. All participants get a free ticket to Monday's game.
