
WhiteWings Bats Cool Off in Loss to Edinburg

Harlingen - After averaging 12.5 runs per game over the last six games, the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings fell to the Edinburg Roadrunners 4-1 Wednesday at Harlingen Field.
David Cross (1-3) scattered a pair of single through four scoreless innings. The Roadrunners (19-7) broke through in the top of the fifth when Vincent Blue led off with a triple. One out later Robert Matlock grounded out to score Blue making it 1-0.
Osiel Flores led off the top of the sixth with his third home run of the season to make it 2-0.
The WhiteWings (14-13) responded against Wardell Starling (5-0) in the bottom of the inning. Javis Diaz hit a one-out double and scored on a two-out single by Arlon Quiroz to make it 2-1.
That was it against Starling, who struck out eight while allowing six hits in eight innings.
Blue led off the top of the seventh with an infield-single. One out later, Robert Matlcok and Melvin Perez hit back-to-back singles to drive-in Blue and knock out Cross. Freddy Ballestas walked Flores to load the bases and threw a wild pitch to score Matlock, making it 4-1.
Cross struck out five in six and one-third innings while allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk.
Julio Castro struck out two in a perfect ninth for his sixth save.
The WhiteWings and Roadrunners play game two of this four-game series on Thirsty Thursday, presented by Local's Lounge, Fox 2 Cable 6 and Q 94.5 the Rock Station at 7:05 p.m., when fans can get $1 drafts and $2 bottles. Gates open at 6:05. Right-hander Luis Montano (3-1) is expected to face right-hander Mark DiBernardo (2-1).
