Roadrunners Remain Perfect Against 'Wings

HARLINGEN, Texas---The Edinburg Roadrunners remain perfect on the season against the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings after a 4-1 victory Wednesday night at Harlingen Field.

Wardell Starling (5-0) picked up his fifth win of the season after pitching eight innings and holding the WhiteWings to one run on six hits and striking out eight.

Vincent Blue led off the top of the fifth with a triple to left center and then came into score on an RBI ground out by Robert Matlock giving the Roadrunners the 1-0 lead.

Edinburg (19-7) extended their lead in the top of the sixth inning after Osiel Flores hit a solo home run, his third of the season, off of WhiteWings starter David Cross (1-3) making it 2-0.

RGV (14-13) answered in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single by Arlon Quiroz that drove in Javis Diaz from second cutting the Roadrunners lead 2-1.

In the top of the seventh, Blue led off with a single and then moved to third after a single by Matlock. With runners on the corners, Melvin Perez hit an RBI single to right center field that allowed Blue to score from third. Flores then drew a walk to load the bases and a wild pitch from RGV reliever Freddy Ballestas allowed Matlock to score making it 4-1 Edinburg.

Julio Castro pitched a perfect ninth giving Edinburg the 4-1 victory while picking up his sixth save of the season.

The Roadrunners and WhiteWings will play game two of this four-game series Thursday night at Harlingen Field. Mark DiBernardo (2-1) is expected to face Luis Montano (3-1) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
