San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, TX - The Colts got their series with the Coastal Bend Thunder off to a strong start Wednesday night at Foster Field as centerfielder Ronnie Gaines finished a double short of the cycle in the San Angelo 17-3 win. Third baseman Landon Camp also had a great game, going 2-5 with a homer, double, three runs scored and four RBI to lead the Colts attack.
The Colts got things rolling in the first inning on an RBI double by first baseman Josh Collazo, which scored Gaines (who had tripled earlier) to give the Colts a 1-0 lead. San Angelo would add three runs in the second on a three-run blast by Gaines (5), his second in as many games, to give the Colts a four-run advantage. In the third, third baseman Landon Camp brought in two more runs on a homerun (2) as the Colts increased the advantage to 6-0.
The Thunder finally got on the board in the fourth on a solo homer by third baseman Leivi Ventura, his seventh of the season. They would add another run in the frame on an RBI single by designated hitter Carl Johnson to cut the San Angelo lead to four.
But the Colts would get the runs right back with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Collazo doubled home his second run in the fourth, and catcher Trey Carter did the same in the fifth to give the Colts an 8-2 lead.
Thunder first baseman Brian Nichols smacked a solo homer (7) to get Coastal Bend a run back, but San Angelo would put things away with a seven-run sixth inning highlighted by a two-run double from Camp. The Thunder pitchers hit three batters in the inning, two of which drove in runs with the bases loaded. Another run scored on a bases loaded walk before shortstop Butch Ballez finished the scoring with an RBI single to increase the Colts advantage to 15-3.
San Angelo added two more runs in the seventh on a two-run single by Ballez. The only drama that remained was whether or not Gaines would reach the cycle. As he came to the plate, the Colts had runners at first and second with two out in the seventh. Gaines hit a shot down the leftfield line that appeared would be a certain double. But Ballez was thrown out trying to go from first to third on the play and the inning ended before Crosland could score from second. The play credited Gaines with only a single, finishing him a double short of the cycle.
Lost in the effort was the sensational pitching job from Brian Henschel who went the distance for the Colts allowing three earned runs on 10 hits and striking out six to get the win (2-2). The loss went to Coastal Bend starter Toro Trevino (1-4) who went five innings while allowing eight runs on seven hits.
The Colts and Thunder will square-off in game two of their four-game series tomorrow beginning at 7:05. Southpaw Aaron Cunningham (1-3, 7.58 ERA) will go for San Angelo against J.J. Trujillo (2-2, 4.85 ERA) of the Thunder. Tomorrow is also Thirsty Thursday at Foster Field presented by Miller Lite and Lonestar 92.9 FM as draft beers will be available for sale for only $1. The game can be heard on 1260 KKSA with the Kemps Pregame Show getting things started at 6:50.
