Whitehead Named USHL Goaltender of the Week

The United States Hockey League (USHL) announced Wednesday that Stars goaltender Cameron Whitehead has been named the Goaltender of the Week for Week 1 of the 2022-23 season.
Whitehead helped the Stars earn a two-game sweep of the Dick's Sporting Goods Fall Classic by stopping 45-of-46 shots in a pair of wins last week. The netminder from Orleans, Ontario, stopped 15-of-16 shots in a 4-1 win over Cedar Rapids and then turned aside all 30 shots in a 6-0 victory against Green Bay.
"(Shutouts) don't happen every game," Whitehead said, "and the team played great in front of me. It's easier when they score six goals in front of me to feel a little more relaxed. Kind of took one period at a time and really focused on winning each period and we got the result that we wanted."
Whitehead matched his shutout total from last season in his second game of the new campaign. He is in his second year with the Stars after going 16-8-2-2 with a 3.19 goals against average and .892 save percentage a season ago. He is committed to play at Northeastern University and was drafted in the fourth round of this past summer's NHL Entry Draft by the Vegas Golden Knights.
"He was square, he was seeing pucks, he was handling his rebounds and he was extremely poised and patient and confident in the net," Stars head coach Rocky Russo said. "That's what an NHL goalie looks like and that's where he has developed to. I don't think we had a goalie win back-to-back starts all of last year and I wanted to get that monkey off everyone's backs this year."
Whitehead and the Stars look to remain unbeaten early in the 2022-23 campaign as they face the Sioux Falls Stampede on Friday at 7:05 p.m. at the Ice Box.
