DUBUQUE, IA-Jakob Romo scored the game-winning goal to lead the White All-Stars to a 4-2 victory over the Red All-Stars in the Dubuque Fighting Saints Tryout Camp All-Star Game on Saturday afternoon. The two teams consisted of the top 40 players from the club's Tryout Camp held this week. The All-Star Game rosters included returning players, draft picks and camp invites all looking to make the 2015-2016 Fighting Saints roster.
The contest, played in two, 30-minute halves, was opened with a goal by the Red All-Stars. Forward Michael O'Leary, a 2014 draft pick and Cornell commit, opened the scoring at the 11:14 mark. After a turnover in from of the White All-Stars goal, O'Leary, a top prospect for the 2016 NHL Draft, capitalized on a point-blank opportunity. Assists came from Cole Guttman and Zack Solow, who created the turnover.
The White All-Stars would tie the game five minutes later as Matt Miller, a 2015 draft pick, scored on a wrist shot from the slot. John Stampohar and Nick Bondra assisted on the tying goal.
Both squads got strong goaltending in the first half of the game. White All-Star goaltender Jaxon Castor, the Fighting Saints 2nd round selection in Phase Two of the 2015 USHL Draft, stopped 11 shots, while 2013 draft pick Elijah Harris was equally as strong, also making 11 saves.
The White All-Stars would open up the game in the second half with a pair of goals in the first five minutes. Darien Craighead struck only 1:10 into the period to give White a 2-1 lead. White All-Stars forward Charlie Combs fired a shot that hit the post, but Craighead buried the rebound past new goaltender Andrew Walters to give White the lead.
The eventual game-winning goal came from Romo at the 4:29 mark. Romo, who made Dubuque's roster out of camp last year, missed all of last season with a concussion. Now healthy, the California native returned to Dubuque with a bang, striking on a wrist shot to give the White All-Stars a 3-1 lead. Romo powered down the left wing before snapping a shot that beat Walters over the glove.
The two teams would trade goals before the horn, as 2015 draft pick Dallas Gerards scored for White, and Edgars Treijs notched a goal for Red late in the game.
White All-Stars goaltender Connor Poczos was strong in goal in the victory. The White All-Stars outshot the Red All-Stars 35-32.
