Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Medicine Hat, Alberta -- The Eastern Division leading Brandon Wheat Kings travel to Medicine Hat today in preparation for Tuesday night's battle with the defending Western Hockey League champion Tigers.
The Wheat Kings will be hoping to extend a pair of impressive winning streaks Tuesday - a 15-game win streak as well as an 8-game road win streak.
Winners of seventeen of their last 18 games, the Wheat Kings enter Tuesday's game with an impressive 41-19-5-1 record, good for 88 points and an eight point cushion on the second place Saskatoon Blades in the Eastern Division. With less than two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Wheat Kings sit atop the Eastern Conference - three points up on second place Lethbridge and four ahead of the third place Tigers, who currently enjoy one game in hand.
In addition to extending the two win streaks, a victory on Tuesday would also clinch Brandon's third Eastern Division pennant in the past four years.
The Wheat Kings haven't lost since February 4th when they dropped a 5-3 decision to the visiting Calgary Hitmen at the Keystone Centre.
In other related news, all star right-winger Eric Fehr continued his assault on the Wheat Kings' record book this past weekend.
With his two goal performance in Sunday night's 4-2 victory over Moose Jaw, Fehr reached the 100-point plateau for the first time in his 4-year WHL career, thus becoming the first Wheat King in six years to eclipse the century mark. Brett McLean, who split the '98-99 campaign between Brandon and Kelowna, finished that season with 101 points including 47 goals. A year earlier, Cory Cyrenne finished second in league scoring with 47 goals and 118 points.
With six games remaining in the regular season, the Washington Capitals' first round draft choice, has a nine point lead atop the WHL scoring race with 55 goals and 100 points. Fehr is hoping to become the first Wheat King in twenty-one years to win the WHL scoring title. Ray Ferraro led the league in 1983-84 with 108 goals and 192 points. Sitting in second place with 91 points is Ryan Stone while Brandon captain Tim Konsorada is fourth in the WHL with 80 points - three behind Colton Yellow Horn of the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
No team has featured the league's top three scorers since Brian Propp, Ray Allison and Laurie Boschman finished 1-2-3 during the 1978-79 campaign. Propp had 94 goals and a club record 194 points that season, followed by Allison with 153 and Boschman with 149.
Brandon wraps up this week's 3-game road trip on Wednesday night in Swift Current against the Broncos, before returning home to meet the Prince Albert Raiders on Friday night at the Keystone Centre.
At Friday's game, Shoppers Mall Brandon will announce the Wheat Kings' Player of the Year, as chosen by the fans. For those that have yet to cast a vote, be sure to visit the Wheat Kings' official web site located at www.wheatkings.com.
