Wheaties deal Courchene to Chiefs

Brandon, Manitoba - The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings solved their overage dilemma late Tuesday night, as they dealt 20-year old left-winger Corey Courchene to the Spokane Chiefs in exchange for a third round draft choice in the 2007 bantam draft.

The move leaves the Wheat Kings with the WHL limit of three overage players - captain Teegan Moore, left-winger Mark Derlago and center Jeff Topilko.

Courchene had played in one of Brandon's two games this past weekend, collecting an assist in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Warriors in Moose Jaw.

A 3-year WHL veteran, the former fourth round pick (66th overall, 2001) had scored eighteen goals and 46 points in 174 career games.

A former member of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Southeast Blades, the Sagkeeng First Nation product had 11 goals, 24 points and 150 penalty minutes in 56 games during the 2005-06 campaign.

The Wheat Kings, who open up a mini 2-game weekend home stand Friday night against the visiting Red Deer Rebels, currently have 27 players on their roster - three goalkeepers, nine defenceman and 15 forwards.
