Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- Four games, including two "home" games, in four different cities over the course of just five days.
That's the schedule that the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings are faced with this week and so far so good.
After winning just one of their first fifteen road games this season, the defending Eastern Conference Champions hit the highway this week, recording back to back victories away from home - a 3-2 Overtime Shootout in Regina on Tuesday night and a 3-2 win over the first place Warriors in Moose Jaw the following night.
After enjoying a day away from the rink on Thursday, the Wheat Kings go back to work tonight with a game against the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers - a club that currently sits in second place in the WHL's Central Division with an impressive 20-6-0-6 record. Brandon then closes out the week on Saturday with its second game in five days against Regina - a game that will be played in the friendly confines of Winnipeg's MTS Centre.
Saturday's game will be the first of four regular season games to be played in the provincial capital this year. Brandon will play Lethbridge there on February 8th and then wrap up their Winnipeg regular season schedule in March with games against the Warriors and Saskatoon Blades on March 8th and 11th.
During last year's series in Winnipeg, Brandon posted a perfect 4-0-0 record en route to winning its third Eastern Division pennant in four years. As well, Brandon defeated Moose Jaw in game two of their best of seven opening round playoff series.
Winners of four of their last five games, the Wheat Kings currently lead the league with fifteen Manitobans on their roster, including nine from Brandon and three from Winnipeg (Ryan Reaves, Codey Burki and Stephane Lenoski). As well, defenceman Mike Cann - the club's first round pick in the 2003 WHL bantam draft - was born and raised in Winnipeg before his family moved to Cochrane, Alberta.
Tonight's game will feature the Annual Shoppers Mall Teddy Bear Toss at the Keystone Centre while Saturday's game will feature Canadian Idol singing star Rex Goudie performing the national anthem in Winnipeg.
Tickets to both games are on sale now at both the Keystone and MTS Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 (Brandon) or 780-3333 (Winnipeg) or by going on line at ticketmaster.ca
