Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba - The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings are pleased to announce that $562 was raised for Teens Against Drinking, Drugs and Driving during Thursday night's annual CKLQ Sportsman's Dinner in the Keystone Centre's UCT Pavillion.

The proceeds were generated from tips received from Thursday night's coat check, coordinated by the students from Neelin High School.

Thursday's dinner - a third straight sell out - featured comedian John Caponera, former Chicago Blackhawk Dennis Hull and ex-Wheat King center Ray Ferraro of Rogers Sportsnet (picture on front of home page).

In addition to providing a lot of laughs, the event featured a Celebrity Sports Auction. Among the top items that were sold - a Wayne Gretzky autographed Edmonton Oilers jersey ($1,500 to Harry Fraser of Brandon), a Mats Sundin autographed Toronto Maple Leafs' jersey ($900 to West Ag Electric of Brandon), a Mikka Kiprusoff autographed Calgary Flames' jersey ($750 to EJ's Sports Cards and Collectibles of Brandon) as well as two weekend VIP passes to Dauphin Countryfest 2008, compliments of 880 CKLQ ($425 to Bill Johnston of Hunt, Miller and Co. llp.). Other items included a Kobe Bryant autographed basketball ($405 to Will Goodon of Brandon), a Ron Hextall autographed Philadelphia Flyers jersey ($460 to Tom Cornwall of Brandon) and a Scott Niedermayer autographed Stanley Cup photo ($450 to Pizza Express of Brandon).

The Sportsman's Dinner is an annual event to raise money for the hockey club's Scholarship Fund. The WHL understands the importance of setting long term goals from an economic standpoint. That is why the WHL is the leading provider of scholarships in North America.

On the ice, the Wheat Kings kick off a 5-game road trip Saturday night in Saskatoon against the Blades. Brandon is coming off Friday's 3-1 victory over the visiting Prince Albert Raiders to close out a mini 2-game homestand by collecting three of a possible four points. Third period goals by Tyler Dittmer, Scott Glennie and Daniel Bartek led the Wheat Kings, while Max Brandl's goal with 1.24 seconds remaining in the third period spoiled Andrew Hayes' bid for his fourth shutout of the 2007-08 campaign.
