Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings may not play again until this weekend but that doesn't mean that the Eastern Division leaders won't be busy.

The WHL club has announced that members of the club will be visiting ten Brandon schools, signing autographs at Heritage Co-op locations in Brandon, Minnedosa and Erickson as well as taking to the ice in Shoal Lake as part of the Coca Cola / Brandon Source for Sports Minor Hockey Caravan.

As well, ten players will be trading in their skates and sticks to serve on tables Wednesday as Gullivers Grill hosts the 2006 Tip-a-Wheat King Day.

In addition to waiting tables from 5-9 p.m., three players including captain Teegan Moore will be working the lunch crowd from noon to 1 p.m. While Moore will be joined by defenceman Dustin Kohn and Andrew Clark for lunch, seven players will be helping to serve dinner at night. Among them - scoring leader Codey Burki, veterans Ryan Reaves, Tyler Plante, Keith Aulie, Theran Yeo and Mark Derlago as well as 16-year old rookie defenceman Colby Robak.

All tips received by the players will go to the westman chapter of the Canadian Kidney Foundation. Close to $4,000 was generated during last year's event. For dinner or lunch reservations, contact Gullivers Grill at 728-5930.

In an effort to assist in the Mothers Against Drunk Driving Brandon Chapter launch of its seventh annual Red Ribbon Campaign, members of the Wheat Kings will be signing their 2006-07 Team Posters at Heritage Co-op locations in Brandon (Tuesday from 5-6:30 p.m.), Minnedosa and Erickson (Wednesday). Nathan Green and Daryl Boyle will visit the Minnedosa location while Bryan Kauk will travel to Erickson.

Ribbons can be picked up for a donation at approximately thirty Brandon businesses until January 8th with all money going to the local MADD chapter for promotions and programs for victims of impaired drivers. Residents are asked to tie the ribbons to car antennas, key chains and other personal items as a symbol of their commitment to drive sober and as a tribute to victims.

Meanwhile in Shoal Lake, defencemen Colby Robak, center Andrew Clark and rookie netminder Joe Caligiuri will be skating with two of that community's minor hockey teams Tuesday night. In addition to taking to the ice, all three will be available to sign autographs. As well, they'll be distributing tickets to all of Shoal Lake's minor hockey players for the Friday, December 15th WHL game against the visiting Regina Pats - compliments of Brandon Source for Sports and Coca Cola Bottling.

All three players should be familiar with the Shoal Lake Communiplex, home of the Yellowhead Chiefs as the Wheat Kings are graduates of the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League. While Clark played with the Brandon midget Wheat Kings, Caligiuri was a member of the Winnipeg Wild and Robak was a 15-year old defenceman on last year's edition of the Parkland Rangers.

On the ice, the Wheat Kings completed a 2-game sweep of a weekend home stand Saturday night with a 3-1 victory over the visiting Prince Albert Raiders. With the win, Brandon improved its record to 13-10-0-2, good for 28 points and a three point lead on the second place Swift Current Broncos in the East Division.

Brandon plays three games in three nights this coming weekend, beginning Friday night in Saskatoon. The Wheat Kings will then return home to host the Blades on Saturday and Prince Albert on Sunday night. Sunday is the first Rain Check Game of the season, which means any unused ticket can be exchanged at the box office for this game.
