Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Regina, Saskatchewan - The goaltending tandem of veteran Andrew Hayes and rookie Ty Rimmer turned aside 46 of 48 shots Wednesday night in backstopping the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 6-2 pre-season victory over the hometown Regina Pats.
Hayes, the 19-year old Sherwood Park Alberta product, who appeared in 46 games during the 2008-09 Western Hockey League season, stopped 25-26 while 17-year old Edmonton product Rimmer made 21 saves on 22 shots for the Wheat Kings, who improved their Western Hockey League pre-season record to 2-0-0. Rimmer was Brandon's 14th round selection (303 overall) in the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft.
Former Manitoba Junior Hockey League Rookie of the Year Jordan DePape and 18-year old veteran Jesse Hall led the winners with two goals each while Del Cowan and former AAA Midget Wheat King Michael Ferland added singles.
Mitch Czibere and Alex Pym replied for the Pats, who trailed 2-0 and 4-2 at the period breaks.
While Brandon's netminding duo made 46 saves, Regina's Linden Rowat and Dawson Guhle teamed up to stop 30-36 shots.
The Wheat Kings, who were 1-2 with the man advantage while killing off all eight penalties called against them, will close out their 4-game pre-season schedule this weekend with a home and home series with Moose Jaw, beginning Friday night at Westman Communications Group Place.
Brandon opens up the 2009-10 regular season on Friday, September 18th in Prince Albert against the Raiders.
