Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. -- The Brandon Wheat Kings have regained top spot in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division.
The Wheat Kings ran their winning streak to three games Wednesday night with an exciting 5-3 victory over the visiting Saskatoon Blades before over 4,600 fans at Westman Place.
Brenden Walker's goal eight minutes into the third period snapped a 3-3 tie and gave the Wheat Kings the win, improving their record to 45-18-1-3 - good for 94 points and a one point lead on the second place Blades with just over a week remaining in the regular season.
The goal was Walker's seventh of the season and second game winner. A former member of the 2009 Manitoba Junior Hockey League Champion Portage Terriers, Walker enters the weekend with seven goals and 17 points.
Former Kamloops Blazer Shayne Wiebe scored once and set up two others for the winners, while singles came off the sticks of Brayden Schenn, Matt Calvert and Aaron Lewadniuk, who has now managed at least a point in sixteen of his last 17 games.
Walker Wintoneak, Josh Nicholls and Derek Hulak replied for the Blades, who outshot Brandon 25-24.
Wednesday's win sets up quite the week for both the Wheat Kings and Blades as the two battle the Calgary Hitmen for first place in both the Eastern Conference and overall in the WHL.
The Wheat Kings close out a 5-game home stand Friday night against the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors. All star defenceman Travis Hamonic will take to the ice to face his former team for the first time since January's blockbuster trade that saw the Wheat Kings send rookie blueliner Travis Ehrhardt and three draft picks to the Warriors.
The Warriors roll into town Friday night with a record of 32-24-5-5, good for 74 points and third place in the Division.
Fans attending Friday's game are encouraged to stop by one of the two Tim Hortons concourse displays before the game or during the intermission for a chance to win an autographed Limited Edition Sidney Crosby framed photo. To enter, fans need to purchase a $2 ticket, with all of the proceeds going to Helping Hands of Brandon.
Tickets to Friday's game are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also purchase online at ticketmaster.ca or by calling 726-3555.
