Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB. - On a night dubbed "Winning Wednesday" the Brandon Wheat Kings scored a much needed victory at Westoba Place.

The Wheat Kings erupted for four unanswered third period goals to beat the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings 5-2.

With the win, the Wheat Kings moved to within six points of both Calgary and Red Deer - who currently occupy the final two playoff berths in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Conference.

The win also meant that thanks to Wednesday night's promotion, all 2,737 fans in attendance will now receive a "free" ticket to next Wednesday's game against the Hitmen.

As for this Wednesday's game, the Wheat Kings were down 2-1 through forty minutes of play but tied the score in the first minute of the third on Linden McCorrister's shorthanded marker.

Six minutes later, Luka Burzan - with his 31st goal of the year - gave Brandon its first lead of the game and the Wheat Kings never looked back.

Captain Stelio Mattheos, with his team leading 34th goal and Connor Gutenberg, into the empty net rounded out the scoring as the Wheat Kings improved to 24-22-3-4 on the season.

Ben McCartney also scored for the Wheat Kings, who received a stellar 37 save performance from Jiri Patera.

Conner McDonald and Vince Loschiavo scored in a losing cause for the Oil Kings while former Brandon goalkeeper Dylan Myskiw made 17 saves and was tagged with the loss.

"Every game's big for our group right now," Wheat Kings head coach David Anning told Perry Bergson of the Brandon Sun. "We just played the top team in the Central Division, played well, got better as the game went on and got a huge two points for our group. We're trying to track down some teams, and we have to make sure we look after ourselves and take care of business on our end."

The Wheat Kings busy month of February continues this weekend with a home and home series with the league leading Raiders, beginning Friday night in Prince Albert.

The two teams will then play at Westoba Place on Saturday night - Don Cherry Theme Jersey Night, presented by ReMax. The Wheat Kings will take to the ice with special theme jerseys, in support of Organ Donation and the Canadian Kidney Foundation. The jerseys will be auctioned off before and during the first two periods and intermissions. As well, one jersey autographed by Grapes himself will be available for auction while fans will have the opportunity to purchase tickets for a chance to win the second.

Tickets to Saturday's game are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
