Wheat Kings Open Preseason with Home-And-Home against Pats
September 8, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
The regular season may be two weeks away, but for those players with the Brandon Wheat Kings at the moment, the real work begins today.
The Wheat Kings begin their preseason with a home-and-home against their closest rivals, the Regina Pats, starting with a road game in Regina on Friday, September 8. The rematch goes the following night and will be the first game on the home schedule for the team in the preseason.
"We've tried to make it clear in veterans meetings to start camp and our orientation meetings to start training camp, one of the things we said was there are jobs to be won, there are roles to take control of," said head coach and GM Marty Murray. "It'll be fun to see who rises to the occasion."
While the Wheat Kings will be without stars like Nate Danielson and Carson Bjarnason, who are off to NHL camps with Detroit and Philadelphia respectively, the talent available to Brandon still features plenty of familiar faces. Returning veterans like Rylen Roersma and Nolan Flamand are ready to fight for expanded roles with the team. Meanwhile, on the back end, players like Charlie Elick are eager to climb the ladder and fight for a greater share of the ice time.
The preseason is also a chance for the youngest players in camp to experience their first taste of WHL action. While they can't join the team full time yet, the top picks for the team in the 2023 WHL prospects draft can suit up in exhibition action, and three of those players are available to the Wheat Kings for the preseason, including first round picks Jaxon Jacobson and Giorgos Pantelas, and fourth rounder Isaac Davies, all of whom have been through a full training camp and several practices with the club.
Regina, meanwhile, may be a team in transition. Their leading scorer from last season, Connor Bedard, is not in camp, nor is their leading defensive scorer Stanislav Svozil. With major minutes up for grabs on the Pats at virtually all positions, their young players have plenty to compete for even though the games don't yet count in the standings.
Regardless of the outcome in Regina, the two teams will meet again in Brandon the following evening. Puck drop on the preseason opener in Brandon will be 7:00 local time.
