Wheat Kings Look for Bounce Back Monday

Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings will be looking to get back on track Monday night when they play host to the Regina Pats in another holiday scheduled game at Westoba Place.

The Wheat Kings, who entered the nine day Christmas break earlier this month on a roll, hit a bit of a speed bump this past weekend to kick off the unofficial start of the 2019-20 Western Hockey League regular season.

Brandon followed up a 4-0 Friday night loss to the ICE by dropping a disappointing 3-2 decision in Winnipeg on Saturday.

The ICE struck for two third period goals to beat the Wheat Kings and complete a sweep of their home and home weekend series.

Brandon coach Dave Lowry says it wasn't the start that they had hoped for when they arrived back in the city after Christmas, but he was happy with the effort in Saturday's defeat.

"I thought we were emotionally invested," Lowry told the Brandon Sun. "I thought we played extremely hard. We made a couple of mistakes and the power play can't give up a goal at the start of the third period. You're in control of a hockey game. You're going into the third period on the road with the lead. The power play can't give up that goal."

By dropping back to back games to the ICE, the Wheat Kings find themselves back in fourth place in the WHL's Eastern Division with a record of 15-17-1-2, four points back of third place Saskatoon and ten behind Winnipeg, who currently occupy second place.

Brandon went into the weekend having not lost a game in regulation this month.

Unlike the Wheat Kings, the Pats have maintained their pre-Christmas momentum by picking up two wins this weekend.

Regina is coming off a 2-game sweep of the last place Moose Jaw Warriors, have managed a point in four straight games and have compiled a 5-3-1-1 record in its last ten games.

The Pats, who currently trail the Wheat Kings by nine points in the standings, are currently 10-18-3-1 on the season and have been led by veterans Austin Pratt and defenceman Zach Wytinck.

While Pratt leads Regina in scoring with twelve goals and 30 points, Wytinck is averaging close to a point per game with 26 points in thirty games.

Monday's game will be the third of a 4-game in five night run for the Wheat Kings, who travel to Moose Jaw for a New Years Eve matchup with the Warriors on Tuesday.

Brandon will then return home to host the defending champion Prince Albert Raiders on Friday night - Home Depot Family Skate Night, presented by 91.5 Q Country and 94.7 Star FM.

Tickets to both games this week go back on sale Monday morning at the Keystone Centre box office or by calling (204) 726-3555. However, fans can beat the rush before that by ordering online at keystonecentre.com.
