Wheat Kings' Late Push Falls Short in Moose Jaw

September 29, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

The Brandon Wheat Kings' offense finally hit something of a wall in Moose Jaw. The Warriors, meanwhile had their big guns firing.

Nolan Flamand and Jayden Wiens scored and Carson Bjarnason made 26 saves but it wasn't enough as the Wheat Kings fell 5-2. Brayden Yager had two goals for Moose Jaw, while Jagger Firkus had another and Jackson Unger made 35 saves.

Atley Calvert started the scoring for the Warriors, parked at the bottom of the right circle, ready and waiting, when the Warriors won a battle below the Wheat Kings goal line. Then, after Bjarnason made the initial save on a shot by Pavel McKenzie, Firkus followed up and knocked home his own rebound.

Flamand answered for the Wheat Kings after Luke Shipley streaked in up the right wall on the power play and laid a perfect pass on his tape. Flamand steered it home to cut the Warrior's lead in half.

The Wheat Kings pressed in the early part of the second period but could not solve Unger, despite seven shots in the opening three minutes. The Warriors made them pay for their misses, as Yager sniped his first of the season on the man advantage from the top of the right circle.

Later in the frame, Yager found himself all alone, sent into the clear after a miscue inside the Wheat Kings line, and he made no mistake.

Calvert carried the momentum forward for Moose Jaw in the third, scoring on an early power play after being set up by Firkus, who fought through a check to set him up.

Wiens scored the final goal of the game by doing what he does best: driving to the net and banging away at a loose puck. The Wheat Kings even tried to recreate that goal later on, to no avail.

With the loss, the Wheat Kings fall to 2-1-1 on the season. They'll have a chance to bounce back on home ice tomorrow night against the Swift Current Broncos.
