Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB. - With the Brandon Wheat Kings set to bring the curtain up on their 2018-19 regular season this weekend, the Western Hockey League club has announced that veteran Stelio Mattheos has been named its new captain.

A three year WHL veteran, Mattheos becomes the 62nd captain in franchise history, succeeding James Shearer.

A former first round bantam draft choice of the Wheat Kings, Mattheos is coming off a career year that saw the 19-year old Winnipeg product score 43 goals and 90 points in 68 regular season games.

Since joining the Wheat Kings in 2015, the Carolina Hurricanes draft pick (round 3; 73rd overall in 2017) is averaging close to a point per game. Mattheos has scored 83 goals and 182 points in 188 career WHL games.

Brandon's alternates for the 2018-19 campaign will be defencemen Schael Higson and Braden Schneider as well as forwards Connor Gutenberg and Linden McCorrister.

McCorrister, Gutenberg and Mattheos were all members of Brandon's 2016 WHL Championship club.

"The coaching staff feels that we have a very strong leadership group and the right personalities to lead our team throughout the season." said Head Coach David Anning. "These players have the respect of their teammates and have shown that they're capable of taking on more responsibility. We expect them to lead by example on and off the ice every day."

Higson, 20, is entering his fifth and final season in the WHL and his third full season in Brandon.

The 17-year old Schneider meanwhile is coming off a gold medal performance with Team Canada at the World U18 Championships this past summer and the former first round bantam draft pick is going into his second year with the Wheat Kings.

The Wheat Kings, who went 2-0-1-1 during their 4-game pre-season schedule, will kick off a weekend home and home series with the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday night at Westoba Place.

Tickets to the game are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, online HERE or by calling (204) 726-3555.
