Wheat Kings Facing Must Win Wednesday
March 12, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings face the monumental challenge this week as they go in search of a Western Hockey League playoff spot.
Entering tonight's WHL game between the Rebels and Edmonton Oil Kings in Red Deer, Brandon sits four points out of a playoff spot, with three games to play.
Medicine Hat and Red Deer currently occupy the two wild card berths in the WHL's Eastern Conference, after wins over Brandon this past weekend.
The Wheat Kings, who returned home Sunday after going 1-4-1-0 on what was a pivotal six game road trip, will need to close out the season with three straight victories and hope for some help along the way.
Brandon plays two of its final three regular season games on home ice, including Wednesday's game against the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors. The Wheat Kings will then close out the year with a home and home weekend series with Regina.
With their playoff hopes clearly in "desperation mode" Brandon coach David Anning says that until they've been eliminated, they still have a chance.
"We're in a spot now where any help is appreciated," he told Perry Bergson of the Brandon Sun."We need to make sure that we take care of our job in the final week here. We have three games remaining and we need to get six points and make it as hard on the teams around us as we possibly can."
The Wheat Kings enter the week with a record of 30-27-4-4 and haven't missed the playoffs since the 2012-13 season when they finished in last place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 24-40-4-4.
Wednesday night is Brandon's first home game since February 22nd as the club was forced to hit the road as the Tim Hortons Brier occupied the Keystone Centre. It's also the second and last Rain Check game of the season, meaning that fans with unused tickets (dated November 23rd to Feb. 22nd) can exchange them at the box office for a "free" ticket to this game (regular box office agency fees apply).
In addition to visiting the box office, fans can order their tickets online at keystonecentre.com or by calling (204) 726-3555.
Wednesday's game is a presentation of Red River Mutual.
