
Wheat Kings, Blue Cross To Honour Lumbard

Brandon, Manitoba - A member of Manitoba's Sports Hall of Fame and a fixture in local curling circles will be recognized during Friday's Western Hockey League game at Westman Communications Group Place when the Brandon Wheat Kings play host to the visiting Calgary Hitmen.
Reid Lumbard of Brandon, who was just inducted into the Manitoba's Hall of Fame this past weekend, becomes the first winner of the Manitoba Blue Cross Performer of the Month Award for the 2008-2009 WHL season.
In addition to being honoured last Saturday in Winnipeg, Reid became the newest Manitoba member of the prestigious Governor General's Curling Club in Ottawa in October as a further recognition of his contribution to curling. Lumbard received a Manitoba Curling Association Honourary Life Membership in 1991 and was selected to the Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame in 2000.
As a competitor, Reid's curling career has spanned fifty years. A member of Manitoba's High School Championship team in 1960, he played in eight British Consols Manitoba Men's Championships and reached the provincial final once (1975) and the semi-final once (1978).
However, it was an an organizer that Lumbard made his greatest mark on the sport of curling. During the eighties, he served on various Brandon Curling and Brandon Men's Bonspiel Committee's, followed by executive level involvement with six major championships hosted in Brandon. Those events included the 1988 Manitoba Junior Men's Championship, the '89 Canadian Mixed, the '91 Labatt Tankard Manitoba Men's Championship, the 1993 Scott Tournament of Hearts, President of the 1995 Ford World Curling Championships and Vice President of the '97 Canadian Olympic Trials at the Keystone Centre.
This year marks the fourth season that western Manitoba hockey fans have been given the opportunity to visit the Wheat Kings' official web site and nominate coaches, volunteers, athletes and officials for this prestigious award.
Tickets to Friday's game - Winburn Orthodontics Night - are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca Friday's game is the fourth of Brandon's current 7-game homestand. The Wheat Kings are currently 12-7-1 on the season.
