Wheat Kings Announce Preseason Roster
September 6, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
The battle for roster spots on this season's Brandon Wheat Kings squad has moved on to the next stage. After a weekend of playing against each other, Wheat Kings hopefuls and prospects will face a fresh batch of opponents with the start of their exhibition schedule.
Beginning on Friday, September 8, the Wheat Kings will play four exhibition games, two at home and two away, in a pair of home-and-home series against the Regina Pats and Moose Jaw Warriors. The Wheat Kings face the Pats first on Friday night in Regina.
The very next night, the Wheat Kings are back at home for the first preseason game at Westoba Place at 7:00 against the Pats. After a few days off, they'll host the Warriors at 7:00 PM on Friday, September 15, then travel to Moose Jaw for the rematch on Saturday.
"We're excited about it," said Wheat Kings head coach and GM Marty Murray. "Some of our veterans made some steps over the summer, which is great to see, and some of our young guys are going to be able to come in and play roles right away, so that's great."
Three players from the Wheat Kings' most recent draft will get their very first taste of preseason WHL action as first round picks Jaxon Jacobson and Giorgos Pantelas and fourth round pick Isaac Davies have all cracked the preseason roster.
In addition, four players from the 2022 draft will have a chance to make the team full-time for the first time: first round pick Joby Baumuller, second rounder and Brandon native Easton Odut, third rounder Emerson Clark, and fourth round pick Gradey Hope. Import pick Dominik Petr will also play against WHL opponents for the first time.
"The first thing we want to do is establish a strong work ethic and compete level," said Murray. "That has to be the foundation of who we are, so the tone needs to be set. We need to work hard, short shifts, play fast and play with pace. That's what we're looking to accomplish here."
