CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - The Fifth Annual Whataburger College Classic kicks off tonight with the Baseball America Home Run Derby. Tournament play begins tomorrow (Friday) at 2 o'clock when Mississippi State takes on Oklahoma.
Here's the latest on the four Classic entrants heading into this weekend's action:
Mississippi State Bulldogs (9-3) -
Defeated Western Kentucky 9-3 yesterday afternoon in Starkville for their fifth straight win -
Big wins - Michigan State, UAB -
Hitter to watch - Senior 1B Connor Powers, batting.383-7-28 with a 1.334 OPS. With 3 RBIs in the win over Western Kentucky, he now has eight multi-RBI games. Powers was last week's SEC Player of the Week and Collegiate Baseball's National Player of the Week. -
Pitcher to watch - Freshman RHP Chris Stratton, 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 16.0 innings.
Oklahoma Sooners (13-1) -
Beat Houston Baptist 9-1 yesterday afternoon in Norman for their eighth consecutive victory -

Big wins - four at San Diego State -
Hitter to watch - Sophomore 3B Garrett Buechele, batting.453-5-19 with a 1.324 OPS. Buechele is the son of former major leaguer Steve Buechele, who this year will manage the Frisco RoughRiders in the Texas League. -
Pitcher to watch - Junior closer Ryan Duke, 0-0 with a 1.42 ERA and 6 saves in 6 appearances. The former Calallen star has allowed just 5 hits in 6.1 innings.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (7-4) -
Beat UT-Brownsville 14-5 Tuesday at Chapman Field -
Big win - Texas State -
Hitter to watch - Junior 1B Trey Hernandez, batting.381-5-21 with 11 walks. Hernandez is a former standout at Robstown HS. -
Pitcher to watch - Junior LHP Roy Ferdin, 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA after three starts. Ferdin was a star at Ray HS.
UCLA Bruins (10-0) -
Edged Cal-Riverside 3-2 Tuesday in Los Angeles to remain unbeaten. The 10-0 start is the best for the Bruins in the modern era (dating back to 1955). -

Big wins - Vanderbilt, USC and a 3-game sweep of Nebraska -
Hitter to watch - Sophomore 3B Dean Espy, batting.440-3-12 to lead a balanced Bruin attack which features six players hitting.400 or better. -
Pitcher to watch - Sophomore RHP Gerrit Cole, 3-0 with a 2.50 ERA, with 2 walks and 26 strikeouts in 18.0 innings.
