Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

DUBUQUE, IA- While Ron Burgundy didn't make an appearance on the theme night named after him, the Dubuque Fighting Saints still proved they love lamp and are number one in the rankings, beating Team USA U-17 6-2 Friday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center. Seamus Malone notched four points on the evening, and Dubuque scored four goals in the third period to pull into sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference.

The two teams traded goals in the first period of play in rapid succession. Dubuque goaltender Christian Frey stood tall in the first period, making multiple saves on goalmouth scrambles. However, Jeremy Greenway was finally able to break the scoreless tie with a goal at 14:16 of the opening frame. After Frey made several saves from directly in front of the goal, the puck popped back to Greenway in the high slot. He let a wrist shot go that flew past Frey's glove to make it 1-0 USA.

Just 1:40 later Dubuque tied the game in similar fashion. After two missed chances created by a Seamus Malone rush, Robby Darrar pounded on a loose puck in the slot and fired a shot past USA goaltender Michael Lackey to tie the game at 1-1. Jarrid Privitera and Malone assisted on Darrar's fifth goal of the season.

The second period saw Dubuque struggle to generate offense in the early portions of the frame. Despite this, it was the Fighting Saints scoring the period's lone goal. Karson Kuhlman notched his team leading ninth goal of the year. Privitera and Malone again assisted on the tally, which Kuhlman shoved a shot underneath goaltender Luke Opilka, who entered the game minute's before, to make it 2-1 Dubuque.

It looked like the game would continue to be close in the third period. Team USA U-17 quickly tied the score on a powerplay goal from Auston Matthews only 2:33 into the period. Greenway made a beautiful pass to Matthews on the left wing, and he one-timed a shot past Frey to make it 2-2.

Dubuque responded quickly once again. Shane Eiserman scooped up a loose puck behind the net and dished it in from to Max McHugh. The Dubuque alternate captain double clutched, but wristed a shot that snuck under Opilka's arm to give the Fighting Saints a 3-2 lead at 4:35

With a pair of assists in the game already, Malone continued his recent scoring tear, firing in a pair of goals seven minutes apart. He scored on the powerplay from Alexx Privitera and Dylan Gambrell at 8:26 to make it 4-2. Malone got the puck at the blueline and wired a slapshot past a screened Opilka to add insurance.

At 15:07, Malone was in the right place at the right time for his second goal of the game. Kuhlman was robbed point blank by Opilka, but the rebound deflected to Malone on the left side doorstep where he made no mistake, scoring his ninth goal of the year to tie Kuhlman for the team lead. Jarrid Privitera also added an assist on the goal for his third point of the game.

The Fighting Saints added one last marker on an Eric Robinson powerplay tally at 16:52, assisted by Jordan Klimek and Blake Hillman, to solidify the win.

Dubuque improved to 10-0-0 at home and 15-5-1 on the season. The Fighting Saints were 3-for-8 on the powerplay while USA was 1-for-2. USA outshot Dubuque 30-29. Frey earned his tenth win of the season in goal stopping 28 shots.

Friday night was Ron Burgundy Night and although the legendary anchor himself didn't show, the evening proved to be a hit. Top quotes from the movie were played all night long, and look a-like anchormen littered the arena. A relay race had fans chugging milk, throwing a burrito and fighting a bear, while a one lucky child won a junior news anchor contest.

Saturday is the annual Santa Claus presents: Teddy Bear Toss presented by Queen B Radio as the Fighting Saints host Waterloo at 7:05 p.m. Fans are encouraged to bring a new stuffed animal to the game and throw it on the ice after the Fighting Saints first goal for Toys for Tots. Tickets are available to both games by calling 563.583.6880 or visiting DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
