Indiana Ice News Release
Twenty minutes of special-teams insanity had both team sitting on the edge of their seats as the Indiana Ice and the Muskegon Lumberjacks squared off at L.C. Walker Arena on Friday night.
It was the visiting Ice, though, who held their heads high after the dust settled in the topsy-turvy 4-3 decision. The victory marks Indy's fifth win in their past five games, earning 11 of 12 possible standings points in the stretch.
Brian Pinho (G, A) and Austin Kosack (2A) finished the night with a pair of assists while Patrick Newell, Jason Salvaggio and Tyler Pham also lit the lamp for Indy. Jason Pawloski recorded 28 saves in net for his fourth consecutive win.
Back-to-back penalties early in the second period split what was an even game wide open as Muskegon would be the recipient of 33 penalty minutes in the middle frame alone.
12 seconds after the Lumberjacks' Adam Larkin would occupy the box for a cross checking minor, Alex Toscano dragged Iceman Scott Conway to the surface to receive a game ejection for the altercation along with fighting and instigating penalties.
Indy used the advantage to turn a 1-1 tie into a 3-1 advantage off the sticks of Pinho and Newell. Just ten seconds into the power play, Pinho picked up a loose puck just outside the crease and drove it home to take the lead for the remainder of the game. Conway and Kosack would earn helper's credit for the tally.
Nearly three minutes later, Newell would skate around the faceoff circle to the high slot where his wrister released and soared into the back of the net for the 3-1 advantage.
As the definitive marking of the period and game, Salvaggio's first-career shorthanded goal would prove to be the game-winner after firing from the faceoff circle. Chris Martenet and Pinho would earn the assists on the scoring play.
Muskegon would answer back in the second period with a shorthanded goal by Robbie DeMontis and a power play strike by Trevor Morbeck, but couldn't overcome the one-time three-goal gap.
Team captain Tyler Pham took credit for the first goal of the game midway through the first period off a perfect cross-crease feed from Aidan Muir and Kosack.
Join the Indiana Ice on Friday, December 13 as they host the Muskegon Lumberjacks on "Ugly Holiday Sweater Night" from Pan Am Pavilion. Fans who wear their favorite holiday sweater will receive $3 off admission in addition to special beer prices.
