Whalers Blank Rangers 3-0, Take Series Lead

Scott Wedgewood made 32 saves in his second career postseason shutout as the Plymouth Whalers defeated the Kitchener Rangers 3-0 on Saturday night. Tom Wilson scored twice for Plymouth, who take 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference semi-final series.

The Whalers opened the scoring midway through the opening period with a short-handed goal from Andy Bathgate. The veteran centre carried the puck over the blueline and fired a shot that skipped under Kitchener netminder John Gibson. Bathgate's fifth of the playoffs was assisted by former Ranger Alex Aleardi.

Plymouth out-shot the Rangers 16-13 through 20 minutes of play.

The Whalers carried a 1-0 lead into the second intermission. Whalers goaltender Scott Wedgewood was perfect through two periods, stopping nine shots in a scoreless middle frame, while Plymouth peppered Gibson with 14 pucks.

Tom Wilson extended the Whalers' lead to two goals with less than nine minutes remaining in the game. Gibson made the initial save on Rickard Rakell, but was unable to hold the puck and Wilson was in front of the net to bang in the rebound. The sophomore winger's fifth of the postseason was also assisted by Matthew Mistele.

Wilson would add an empty net goal late in the third to seal the victory. Mitchell Heard was credited with an assist on the play.

Plymouth led shots on goal 18-10 in the final period and finished with a 48-32 overall advantage. Wedgewood made 32 saves in his second career postseason shutout and was named the contest's first star.

The Whalers take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series, which moves to the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium on Sunday, April 15.
