Behind great pitching and defense the Calgary Vipers (19-14) defeated Jose Canseco and the Yuma Scorpions (10-20) 4-1 before 2125 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Stephen Whalen (4-2) got the start and win going six and two-third innings without giving up an earned run and striking out five including Canseco once. Out of the bullpen Mike Burns retired the only batter he faced, Chris Bodishbaugh posted a perfect eighth inning with a strikeout, and Claudio Galva (11) faced the minimum three batters for the save.

Defensively the Vipers turned three double-plays and got outstanding diving catches from third baseman Louie Templeton and center fielder Jonny Kaplan.

At the plate Calgary got all their runs in the second and third inning with two in each frame. Andrew Romo (2-3) took the loss in giving up four runs in seven innings while Canseco finished one-for-four with a single.

Calgary opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning on Drew Miller's 11th home run of the season. Louie Templeton later singled, Jimmy Rohan doubled, Jeff Giacomini was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Bryan Burke collected a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.

The Vipers doubled their lead to 4-0 in the third as Aaron Dunsmore singled, Wilver Perez walked, Miller singled to load the bases, Justin Tellam singled for a run batted in, and Templeton was hit by a pitch for a RBI.

Yuma got a run for a 4-1 score in the fifth frame when Jason Diaz reached on a fielding error, Joey Gathright walked, and after a double-play Diaz scored on a wild pitch.

This five game series against Jose Canseco and the Yuma Scorpions continues on Weiner Wednesday June 29th at 6:30 for $5.00 Student Night, on Thursday June 30th at 7:30 for FIREWORKS, on Canada Day Friday July 1st at 1:05 for Baseball Bonanza, and on Saturday July 2nd at 5:05.

The Calgary Vipers will be hosting three Women's Pro Fastpitch games between the USAA Pride and the Tennessee Diamonds August 2nd, 3rd and 4th at 6:30 at Foothills Stadium. Tickets are $16 for the Lower Bowl and $12 for the Upper Bowl. Three game packages are also available for $45 and $33. In addition there will be two skill clinics August 2nd and 4th from 10am - 12pm. Cost is $99 for a Clinic and Lunch or $120 for the Clinic, Lunch and two Lower Bowl tickets. There will also be a Lunch Banquet August 3rd including an autograph session with both teams and a lower bowl ticket to the August 3rd game for $49.95 with keynote speaker Cheri Kempf, the Commissioner of the NPF and an ESPN analyst.
